Title Repayment by UK of World War I loans from USA: case of James Bertram estate (1974)
Description Concerning the Estate of James Bertram a US citizen who left his estate in trust to his wife and daughter, the principal to be paid, at their death, if his daughter had no issue, to the Chancellor of the Exchequer "to use and apply the same on account of the payment of the National debt of Great Britain to the United States of America". Miss Bertram is now asking the US courts to set aside the will and to grant her full possession of the principal, on the grounds that Her Majesty's Government have repudiated the debt.
